Why “Halad”? Here at the Halad Museum, the name itself whispers a story. “Halad” means “tribute” or “offering” in Cebuano. The Halad Museum, nestled in the heart of Cebu City on V. Gullas Street, is more than just a building. It’s a living, breathing tribute to Cebu’s rich musical heritage. Founded in 2010 by Jose “Dodong” R. Gullas, the museum is housed in the former building of The Freeman Newspaper. This adds another layer of historical significance to this already fascinating place. The Halad Museum first opened its doors to the public on February 2, 2010. It’s a love letter to the founder’s parents, Don Vicente and Inday Pining Gullas. They were the founders of the University of the Visayas, a Cebu institution. Inside the Halad Museum, you will find three main galleries. The Halad Music Gallery showcases Cebuano composers and artists from the 20th century. You can see original music sheets, instruments, and even personal items of these musical giants. Imagine listening to the very music they created on turntables and digital music stations available within the museum. The “Kinaiyang Sugbuanon” gallery offers a glimpse into traditional Cebuano life. It depicts everything from life-cycle events to popular practices and religious expressions. The Founder’s Gallery is dedicated to Jose R. Gullas himself. It showcases his commitment to preserving Cebu’s heritage and honors the influence of his parents. In November 2010, the museum expanded. This made room for a growing collection of musical treasures. The expansion also further cemented the museum’s position as a vital part of Cebu’s cultural landscape. The Cebu City Council recognized this importance in June 2011. They commended Jose R. Gullas for his dedication to preserving Cebu’s heritage through the Halad Museum.
