Do you see this sandy landscape? It stretches out before us here at the Hainberg-Blick. It’s hard to believe that this tranquil nature reserve was once a strategic military site. For centuries, the Hainberg plateau, now the Hainberg-Blick, played a significant role in Nuremberg’s history. During the Thirty Years’ War in the 17th century, this very spot served as a strategic stronghold for General Wallenstein’s forces as they laid siege to Nuremberg. Imagine the sights and sounds of that era: thousands of soldiers, cannons, and the constant threat of battle. The presence of the military, though devastating at the time, inadvertently shaped the landscape. After their departure, the land lay mostly untouched, eventually becoming a training ground again in the late 19th century, this time for the Bavarian, German Imperial, and Wehrmacht armies. Even after World War II, it remained a military zone under US and later, German Armed Forces control until 1994. This continuous military presence, spanning centuries, ironically protected the Hainberg-Blick from development and agriculture, preserving its unique character. Today, Hainberg-Blick stands as a reminder of the enduring power of nature. Over time, wind and the waters of the Rednitz River sculpted this area into what you see today: a fascinating expanse of sand dunes and meager grasslands. It’s a haven for rare and endangered species, a testament to nature’s resilience. As you stand here at Hainberg-Blick, you’re not just enjoying a beautiful view, you’re witnessing a piece of history, shaped by conflict and ultimately reclaimed by the resilience of nature. Enjoy the tranquility, and let the whispers of the past wash over you.
