Peeking around this corner, you’ll find Haghill, a residential neighborhood in Glasgow with a story etched in every street. Haghill sits in the city’s east end. It lies north of the River Clyde. Let’s take a stroll and uncover some of its hidden gems.
Haghill boasts a mix of housing styles. Tenements from the early 1900s stand alongside former council houses. You’ll also spot recently built homes. This blend reflects Haghill’s evolution over the years.
Administratively, Haghill falls within the Dennistoun ward. This has been the case since a 2017 boundary re-assessment. Before that, it was part of the East Centre ward for a decade.
The red sandstone building of the local primary school is located off Walter Street. It opened in 1904. Sadly, it closed a century later. In 2020, the building was still standing. However, it had fallen into disrepair.
Glasgow Kelvin College has a modern campus in Haghill. It’s located off Duke Street. The district sports center, Glasgow Club Haghill, is on Cumbernauld Road. This road is a continuation of Alexandra Parade. Also on Cumbernauld Road is Parkhill Secondary School. It was once known as Kennyhill School. It serves children with special educational needs.
Alexandra Parade and Duke Street railway stations are just west of Haghill. The North Clyde Line runs through these stations. It forms the boundary with Dennistoun. Several buses travel along these roads. They connect Glasgow city center to its eastern suburbs.
Haghill also has a connection to Glasgow’s hilly landscape. The area derives its name from one of the city’s many hills. Papers dating back to the late sixteenth century show the long history of the Todd family of Haghill.
Plans have been proposed for housing on a large site at Haghill. Nearly 100 homes for social rent are planned for vacant land. The location is at Appin Road and on both sides of Todd Street. AS Homes Scotland would build around 90 houses and six cottage flats. About half would be for Home Group. Milnbank Housing Association would manage the rest.
