Do you smell that? It is the scent of history lingering around Hagenbeck Carl’s final resting place.

Hagenbeck Carl, a name synonymous with innovation in the world of zoos. He wasn’t just an animal dealer. Carl Hagenbeck revolutionized how we perceive and interact with wildlife.

Born in Hamburg in 1844, Carl Hagenbeck inherited a fish business from his father. The business included a small menagerie of exotic animals. By 1866, Carl Hagenbeck took over. He transformed it into Europe’s leading animal trading enterprise.

Carl Hagenbeck supplied animals to zoos and circuses across the continent. He had a knack for acquiring unique creatures. He sent hunters to far-flung corners of the globe. Jungles, mountains, and everywhere in between. Carl Hagenbeck brought the exotic to Europe.

But Hagenbeck Carl was more than just a merchant. He was a visionary. Carl Hagenbeck challenged the traditional zoo model. Cages and bars seemed cruel to him. Carl Hagenbeck envisioned open enclosures that mirrored animals’ natural habitats.

In 1907, Carl Hagenbeck realized his dream. He opened Tierpark Hagenbeck in Stellingen near Hamburg. It was the first zoo of its kind. Moats and ditches replaced cages. Animals roamed freely in expansive panoramas.

Hagenbeck Carl’s innovative approach extended to animal training. He believed in befriending animals. He highlighted their intelligence. Carl Hagenbeck demonstrated their tractability. Gone were the days of beatings and hot irons. His humane methods gained popularity.

His influence spread far and wide. The Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus in the United States adopted his training techniques. Zoos around the world emulated his open-air designs. Carl Hagenbeck created a lasting legacy.

However, his story has a darker side. Hagenbeck Carl also displayed human beings in so-called ethnic shows. These Völkerschauen, or human zoos, are now widely considered racist. Carl Hagenbeck exhibited Samoan and Sámi people. He presented them as “purely natural” populations.

Despite the controversy surrounding these exhibits, Carl Hagenbeck’s impact on the zoo industry is undeniable. He pioneered a new way of exhibiting animals. Carl Hagenbeck transformed the zoo experience for generations to come.

Carl Hagenbeck died in 1913 from a snake bite. His sons continued his work. The Hagenbeck family still runs the Tierpark Hagenbeck today.

Now, standing here, we remember the man who changed the zoo forever. Carl Hagenbeck. A visionary. A pioneer. A controversial figure. His legacy lives on in the animals and the park that bears his name.
