In 1896, Bombay was struck by a bubonic plague epidemic. The government called upon Dr. Waldemar Haffkine for help. He was a Russian scientist. He accepted the challenge and began his work. He set up a makeshift laboratory at Grant Medical College. Imagine the scene. A corridor transformed into a hub of urgent research.
Working tirelessly for three months, Dr. Haffkine developed a vaccine. He tested it on himself on January 10, 1897. His vaccine showed remarkable results. This courageous act marked a turning point in the fight against the plague.
The Haffkine Institute was formally established on August 10, 1899. The Governor of Bombay, Lord Sandhurst, handed over this building to Dr. Haffkine. This mansion had quite a history. It was once the official residence of the governor of Bombay. Before that, it was a Jesuit chapel built in 1673. This very spot may have been the site of an old temple. This gave the village its name Parel.
The building has served many purposes. It was a Romish Chapel of Jesuits. It was confiscated by the British after a Maratha invasion. It became the residence of Registrars of Bombay. King Edward VII even stayed here as Prince of Wales in 1895.
Initially, it was named the Plague Research Laboratory. It was then renamed the Bombay Bacteriology Laboratory in 1906. Finally, in 1925, it was named the Haffkine Institute. This honored Dr. Haffkine’s contributions.
Dr. Haffkine left India in 1904. By then, the institute had developed technologies for plague and cholera vaccines. The Haffkine Institute continued to grow. It pursued new disciplines and established new departments.
Today, the Haffkine Institute is a teaching institution. It is affiliated with the University of Mumbai. It offers M.Sc, Ph.D., and M.D. degree programs.
