Built in 1890, Hafenklang originally housed the streetcar horses of the Hamburg harbor railroad. Can you imagine the clatter of hooves and the snorting of these powerful animals echoing within these very walls? Hafenklang has transformed dramatically over the years. In the 1970s, it became a renowned recording studio. This was Hamburg’s first 24-track studio, a pioneering space for musical innovation. Think of the creative energy that pulsed here. Artists like Udo Lindenberg and Einstürzende Neubauten recorded their first albums within Hafenklang, etching their names into the building’s history. Hafenklang continued to evolve. Throughout the 1990s, it blossomed into a beloved music club, a haven for those seeking something beyond the ordinary. The Hafenklang became a stage for diverse genres. Ska, punk, metal, rock, hip-hop, dancehall, and dub all found a home here. The energy of weekend breakbeat dance parties filled the space. Weeknights brought a constant stream of live concerts, showcasing unique bands of all stripes. Hafenklang even boasts a second concert venue. The “Golden Salon” on the first floor offers a more intimate space, complete with its own small stage and a punk regulars’ table. Hafenklang has faced its share of challenges. In 1997, public outcry saved it from demolition. Years later, in 2007 and 2008, renovations forced the club to temporarily relocate to Große Bergstraße in Altona-Altstadt. It eventually returned to its rightful place on Große Elbstraße, enhanced with three additional floors that now house the “Golden Salon” and offices. Hafenklang stands today as a testament to its resilient spirit, a vibrant hub of music and community.
