Legend whispers of Emperor Ōjin’s reign. This is Hachiōji Shrine in Osaka. Its story begins in 272 AD. That’s when this sacred place was founded. It’s said to be the guardian shrine of Honjō Village.

For centuries Hachiōji Shrine stood watch. It was initially known as Hachiōji Inari Shrine. People also called it Tsubaki-no-Miya the Shrine of Camellias. Emperor Kotoku even gifted a pair of magnificent Komainu. These Korean-style lion-dog statues still stand guard.

In 1872 during the Meiji era a significant change occurred. The shrine was renamed Baekje Shrine. Then in 1909 it merged with Yatsurugi Shrine. The latter was Nishi-Imazato Village’s guardian shrine. The joining created the Hachiōji Shrine we know today.

Hachiōji Shrine is more than just a building. Five deities dwell within its sacred walls. Hachiōji kami is the principal deity. Uka no Mitama no Kami Susanoo-no-Mikoto Kushinadahime-no-Mikoto and Ōkuninushi-no-Mikoto also reside here. Each deity holds a unique place in Japanese mythology. Each contributes to the shrine’s powerful spiritual energy.

Today you can still feel the weight of history at Hachiōji Shrine. You stand before a place that has witnessed centuries of devotion.
