Envision a place where the science of food meets the art of engineering. This is Hacettepe Üniversitesi Gıda Mühendisliği Bölümü, the Department of Food Engineering. Hacettepe Üniversitesi Gıda Mühendisliği Bölümü stands as a testament to Turkey’s commitment to innovation in the food industry. Established in 1977 within the Faculty of Engineering, it began its journey under a different name, “H.Ü. Gıda Analizleri ve Teknolojisi Bölümü”. This translates to “H.U. Food Analysis and Technology Department.” Originally a two-year program located on the central campus, it transitioned to a four-year program under the Faculty of Home Economics in 1975. The department moved to the Beytepe Campus in 1977, finally finding its current home, a building originally intended for Earth Sciences, and was renamed Hacettepe Üniversitesi Gıda Mühendisliği Bölümü. The first class graduated with the title of “Food Engineer” in 1980. Hacettepe Üniversitesi Gıda Mühendisliği Bölümü has played a crucial role in shaping the future of food science and technology in Turkey. In 1982, it branched into two specializations: Food Science and Food Technology. The department also offers MSc and PhD programs, nurturing the next generation of food engineering experts. Hacettepe Üniversitesi Gıda Mühendisliği Bölümü aims to cultivate engineers with comprehensive theoretical and practical knowledge in all aspects of food. From processing and product development to quality control, preservation, and even marketing, the department covers it all. Graduates of this esteemed program contribute their expertise to diverse sectors. They work in food industries and public institutions, engaging in production planning, process design, quality control, and marketing. The department boasts a curriculum that combines Turkish and English instruction. One-third of the courses are delivered in English, and students receive a year of English preparatory education. The department moved to a new building in 1983, a project funded by the State Planning Organization. In 2015, an additional building was added to accommodate the department’s growing needs. Hacettepe Üniversitesi Gıda Mühendisliği Bölümü continues to be at the forefront of food engineering education and research, contributing significantly to the Turkish food industry.
