Slipping through the cracks of time, imagine Haan 3-dong, not as it stands today, but as a bustling hub during the Joseon Dynasty. Haan 3-dong, nestled within the vibrant tapestry of Seoul, then known as Hanyang, played a silent yet crucial role in the city’s evolution. King Taejo, the founder of the Joseon Dynasty, envisioned a secure and prosperous capital. In 1396, he commissioned the construction of a formidable fortress wall encircling Hanyang, a wall that would define the city’s boundaries for centuries. Haan 3-dong, though likely outside the immediate confines of the wall, found itself inextricably linked to the city’s fate. The rhythmic clang of the great bells at Sungnyemun and Heunginjimun, marking the daily opening and closing of the city gates, would have reverberated through Haan 3-dong. These gates, standing as sentinels guarding the city’s access points, served as vital connections to the outside world. Haan 3-dong, situated within the larger prefecture of Hanseong, comprised both inner and outer districts. These districts extended approximately four kilometers beyond the city walls. The Jungnangcheon River, the Han River, Mount Bukhan, and Hongjecheon delineated the administrative boundaries of Hanseong, encompassing Haan 3-dong within its embrace. As the city thrived under the Joseon Dynasty, Haan 3-dong witnessed the blossoming of cultural and intellectual life. The establishment of institutions like the Royal Academy of Learning fostered scholarly pursuits, contributing to the vibrant intellectual landscape of Hanyang. Advancements in technology and agriculture spurred economic growth, and Haan 3-dong, as part of the larger Hanseong prefecture, undoubtedly benefited from this prosperity. The echoes of this rich history continue to resonate within Haan 3-dong, shaping its character and its place within the modern metropolis of Seoul.
