How about a biscuit empire that started right here at the H. Bahlsens Keksfabrik Plaque? This plaque marks a spot of great importance. It is the location of architectural beauty and confectionery history. The H. Bahlsens Keksfabrik Plaque commemorates the beginning of a legacy.

In 1889, Hermann Bahlsen founded the “Hannoversche Cakesfabrik H. Bahlsen”. This was the start of the company’s journey. Bahlsen began with just ten employees. It was a small operation with big dreams. Hermann Bahlsen aimed to create sweet treats that would bring joy.

The H. Bahlsens Keksfabrik soon became known for its quality. In 1891, the Leibniz-Keks was introduced. This butter biscuit became the company’s best-known product. It was named after Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. He was a famous inhabitant of Hanover. The Leibniz-Keks quickly gained popularity.

By 1893, the company employed 100 staff members. The Leibniz Cakes received a gold medal at the World Exhibition in Chicago. The jury praised its fine butter taste. Competitors tried to imitate it. But only Bahlsen captured the true flavor.

In 1904, Bahlsen introduced the TET packaging. This was a dust and moisture-resistant paper-board. It kept the biscuits fresh longer. The TET sign featured an oval with a snake and three dots. It symbolized “everlasting” from ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs.

A year later, Bahlsen introduced Europe’s first assembly line. This was eight years before Henry Ford adopted it in the automotive industry. Bahlsen was at the forefront of innovation.

In 1911, Hermann Bahlsen changed the English word “cakes” into “Keks”. This new term was officially approved. It was added to the German Duden dictionary. The company also moved into a new factory building. The headquarters were located in Podbielskistraße.

This building was designed by the Siebrecht brothers in 1911. It is considered one of the best examples of Art Nouveau architecture in Hanover. The H. Bahlsens Keksfabrik Plaque celebrates this architectural achievement.

During the Nazi era, the Bahlsen brothers were members of the NSDAP. The company used forced laborers from various European countries. Most of them were women from Poland and Ukraine. After the war, Bahlsen quickly regained its importance. By 1945, 60 percent of the factory was destroyed. But the company received a production license.

Today, Bahlsen is an international company. It exports products to over 80 countries. The company’s headquarters remain in Hanover. The historic buildings are protected monuments. Bahlsen continues to innovate. It meets consumer needs around the world.

Remember the H. Bahlsens Keksfabrik Plaque. It marks the beginning of a sweet journey. From a small factory to an international empire. Bahlsen’s story is one of innovation, quality, and enduring success. It is a testament to the power of a simple biscuit.
