Established in 1933 the Gymnasium und Realschule Maria Stern stands before you. This isn’t just any school. It’s a place steeped in history a testament to Augsburg’s rich past.

Originally founded by the Franciscan Sisters of Maria Stern the school began as a teacher training institute. The sisters had been in Augsburg since 1258. Their long history is woven into the very fabric of this building. Imagine the quiet dedication of those early nuns. Their commitment shaped the school’s foundations.

The building itself is a beautiful example of New Objectivity architecture. Designed by Heinrich Sturzenegger and Anton Horle it’s a striking four-story structure. A flat hipped roof crowns the main building. A chapel extends eastward. Notice the exquisite detail. The chapel features stunning round windows and frescoes. These were crafted by talented artists like Robert Rabolt. Even the crucifix holds a story. It’s the work of Karl Bauer a name synonymous with artistry.

World War II interrupted the school’s work. The building became a reserve hospital. The sisters served as nurses and support staff. They tirelessly served their community even amidst the turmoil. After the war the sisters resumed teacher training. To address a severe teacher shortage they introduced intensive pedagogical courses. These three-semester programs were a testament to their resilience.

Over the decades the school evolved. From a teacher training institute it transformed into a prestigious Gymnasium. A science and technology branch was added in 1990. This broadened the scope of education. In 2001 the school’s sponsorship transferred from the convent to the Schulwerk der Diözese Augsburg. This marked a new chapter in its history but preserved its Catholic identity.

Today the Gymnasium und Realschule Maria Stern continues its mission. It provides a high-quality education to both boys and girls. The school’s commitment to music and the sciences is evident in its robust programs. The rich history of this place inspires its students. It encourages them to pursue excellence and contribute to society. This building breathes history. It whispers stories of dedication and perseverance. It represents the enduring spirit of Augsburg itself.
