Founded in 797, Gymnasium Paulinum whispers tales from over twelve centuries. It stands here as one of the oldest schools in Germany. Imagine students from all those years ago walking these same grounds.

Gymnasium Paulinum started as a monastic school. Ludger, a missionary instructed by Charlemagne, founded it. He aimed to educate future clergy. In 805, the school transformed into a cathedral school dedicated to St. Paul. It became known as “Schola Paulina”.

The Gymnasium Paulinum’s history intertwines with Muenster’s story. Around 1500, humanists reformed the school. Rudolf von Langen and Hermann von Kerssenbrock shaped it. It became a leading educational center in Northwest Germany. Its influence stretched to the Netherlands and the Baltic Sea.

In 1588, the Jesuits took over Gymnasium Paulinum. They ran it until their order dissolved in 1773. During this time, it was called Collegium Monasterium. Later, Franz von Fuerstenberg modernized the school. He introduced new subjects like history, mathematics, and geography. He also improved German language instruction.

Even when Muenster became Prussian in 1815, Gymnasium Paulinum remained important. It served as a testbed for educational reforms. These reforms were later implemented in other regional schools. The city of Muenster took over the Gymnasium Paulinum in 1974. Coeducation was introduced in 1978.

Since 2002, Gymnasium Paulinum has been a “Selbststaendige Schule”. It focuses on its humanistic traditions. Gymnasium Paulinum shares the title of “Oldest School in Germany” with Gymnasium Carolinum in Osnabrueck. They compete in an annual football game for the honor.

In 2007, Gymnasium Paulinum became a “School of Europe”. In 2009, it gained “IB World School” status. Students can now pursue the International Baccalaureate Diploma. Instruction for this diploma is in English.

Interestingly, the school grounds once held Muenster’s Jewish cemetery. It was destroyed after the 1350 pogrom. A memorial stone from 1324 now resides in Muenster’s synagogue. In 2015, the school’s art class created a memorial stone. It commemorates the former cemetery.

The Gymnasium Paulinum motto is “Almae dicavere alumni qui fuere”. It means “Dedicated to the nurturing of the alumni who have been”. This reflects the school’s long tradition of fostering students’ growth. Today, Gymnasium Paulinum continues to evolve. It prepares students for the challenges of a global world. It maintains its commitment to academic excellence and personal development.
