Gymnasium Osterbek

A hidden bunker lies beneath. This is the Gymnasium Osterbek. Founded in 1971 it wasn’t always here. Initially known as Gymnasium Farmsen II it began its life at Hermelinweg. A new beginning arrived in 1973. The school moved to its current location on Turnierstieg. 250 students walked through its doors. The year 1974 marked a significant turning point. The school was renamed Gymnasium Osterbek. The new building was officially opened. The Cold War cast a long shadow. A civil defense shelter was built beneath the east wing. It could hold 700 people. A testament to a bygone era. This hidden refuge is a secret many don’t know. A stark reminder of a time of uncertainty. The school’s history isn’t just about classrooms and exams. It’s also about adapting to changing times. In 1975 a cooperation with Gymnasium Farmsen began. This partnership expanded learning opportunities. A multi-purpose hall and administration building opened in 1976. Ambitious plans for an upper school building were later abandoned. Hamburg’s declining student population forced a change of plans. A vote in 1978 decided against transforming the school into a comprehensive school. It remained a Gymnasium. A bilingual French program started in 1981. This enriched the school’s educational offerings. After the neighboring Haupt- und Realschule Turnierstieg closed in 1983 the Gymnasium took over its building. This provided much-needed extra space. The space compensated for the unbuilt upper school building. The school’s growth continued. By 2017-18 it had three decades of history behind it. The school authorities even considered expanding. They wanted two additional parallel classes per grade. That would have meant five classes per grade. The Gymnasium Osterbek stands as a significant landmark in Bramfeld. Its architecture reflects the design trends of its era. It’s a pair of Type 68 school buildings. This design was used extensively in Hamburg’s suburbs. Between the late 1960s and mid-1970s these buildings were built about 50 times. Renovations took place between 2012 and 2015. A new extension to the sports hall was added. Outdoor sports facilities were improved. The administration building and Building 1 were also renovated. Gymnasium Osterbek offers a unique educational environment. Students can join the French branch from the fifth grade. A two-week trip to France is part of the program. The school is one of only four in Hamburg that offers the AbiBac. This allows students to get both a German and a French Abitur. Those not opting for French can study Latin or French from the sixth grade. The school also cooperates with other institutions. It partners with Johannes-Brahms-Gymnasium and Gymnasium Farmsen. A profile upper secondary level started in 2009. It offered three profiles: System Earth Technology Media Economics and Communication in Europe. The Gymnasium Osterbek has nurtured talented individuals. Among its notable alumni are actor Fabian Harloff psychologist Tim Rohrmann and politician Jan Peter Riecken. Each made their mark on the world.
