Did you know that Gymnasium Eppendorf started as a boys-only school? Right here before us stands a building steeped in history. This is Gymnasium Eppendorf a grammar school with a rich past. It opened its doors in 1904. Initially it was known as Realschule in Eppendorf. It was housed in brand new buildings. These buildings stood at the corner of Hegestrasse and Hegestieg. Seven years later the school was renamed Oberrealschule Eppendorf. In 1938 it became Oberschule fur Jungen in Eppendorf. Then in 1957 it officially became Gymnasium fur Jungen in Eppendorf.

Imagine the changes over the decades. The school was exclusively for boys for a long time. Then in 1969 something truly remarkable happened. The school employed its first female teachers. A significant shift in perspective. This paved the way for a momentous change. In 1971 Gymnasium Eppendorf finally became coeducational. It received its current name then. The school embraced a more inclusive and modern approach to education.

One intriguing fact is John Dunston’s connection to Gymnasium Eppendorf. He served as an English language assistant from 1973 to 1974. Think of the impact he may have had on students. His presence enriched the learning environment. It must have broadened their perspectives. He provided a valuable insight into another culture. This highlights the school’s global reach.

The Gymnasium Eppendorf’s history is closely tied to the community. In 2000 a special organization was formed. Hegemalige eV was founded by former students and teachers. It’s a testament to the lasting bonds formed within the school’s walls. The association supported the school’s educational efforts. It acted as a bridge between past and present. It helped to organize annual job fairs. The association also funded the student prize Offene Tur for social engagement.
