Built in 1963 the Gymnasium Corveystraße initially served as a primary school. A striking cross-shaped building designed by Paul Seitz it opened its doors in March of that year. But the story of the Gymnasium Corveystraße as we know it begins later. In 1968 110 students from an overcrowded school on Curschmannstraße found a new home within these walls. This wasn’t just any relocation. It marked the birth of a secondary school. Space was tight at the Gymnasium Bondenwald. The Corveystraße building offered much-needed relief.
The official opening of the Gymnasium Corveystraße was celebrated around Easter 1969. Interestingly the school boasted the youngest teaching staff among all Hamburg Gymnasien. Growth was rapid. By 1973 a new eight-classroom wing was added. Seven hundred students were being taught within its walls. This was followed by the construction of a twelve-classroom building. A gymnasium and sports field soon followed in 1974 and 1976 respectively. The first Abitur examinations were held in 1976. An administrative wing and specialist rooms for music and art were added that same year.
The school’s expansion wasn’t always smooth. The need for an auditorium remained unfulfilled for many years. The authorities failed to provide funding until 1992. Parents and sponsors stepped in generously. The 850000 DM auditorium was finally completed in November 1995. This building was later renamed the Volker-Bärwald-Aula honoring Volker Bärwald. He introduced drama to the curriculum initiated the fundraising campaign and served as headmaster from 1980 until his death. His dedication lives on in the very structure he helped create.
The Gymnasium Corveystraße’s fiftieth anniversary was celebrated in 2018 with a special ceremony for invited guests. A school festival followed on July 2nd with a grand parade through the Lokstedt district on July 3rd. This wasn’t just a celebration of the past. It was a testament to its enduring spirit. The school has built a strong reputation for its commitment to democracy health creativity and environmental sustainability. It offers a unique and diverse learning environment. The Gymnasium Corveystraße isn’t just a school. It’s a vibrant community a testament to the dedication of its teachers students and supporters.
