Established in 1959, Gymnasium Bondenwald stands before you, a testament to Hamburg’s commitment to education. Originally built to accommodate students from Oberschule Lokstedt, displaced by the expansion of Hamburg Airport, Gymnasium Bondenwald quickly became a cornerstone of the Niendorf community. The school’s nickname, “GymBo,” reflects the affection students and staff hold for this institution. Gymnasium Bondenwald boasts a vibrant student body of around 970 pupils, guided by nearly 80 dedicated teachers. The school offers a comprehensive education, from grades 5 to 12, and collaborates with Gymnasium Ohmoor for its specialized upper-level curriculum. Imagine attending classes in the newly constructed building, opened in 2020. This modern facility houses the middle and upper school, providing state-of-the-art learning spaces. The original Kreuzbau building still serves the lower school, connecting the school’s rich history with its bright future. Gymnasium Bondenwald is more than just classrooms and textbooks. The school offers a diverse range of extracurricular activities. From two orchestras and three choirs to the renowned BigBondBand, musical opportunities abound. Students can explore their scientific curiosity through the NWP (nature science project) and EVAT, an innovative “learning by teaching” program. For those interested in global affairs, Gymnasium Bondenwald participates in Model United Nations, offering students the chance to debate international issues. The school also fosters a sense of social responsibility through its charity projects, supporting causes like providing clean water to developing countries and aiding children in Nepal. Located next to the idyllic Niendorfer Gehege, one of Hamburg’s largest urban forests, Gymnasium Bondenwald provides a serene learning environment. The proximity to the Tibarg marketplace, with its shops and underground station, adds to the school’s convenient location. Gymnasium Bondenwald stands as a hub of academic excellence and community engagement, nurturing the next generation of Hamburg’s citizens.
