Cruising down Gyeonginyet-ro, one might not realize they’re traversing a road steeped in the echoes of Seoul’s dramatic expansion. Gyeonginyet-ro, a vital artery in Guro-gu, whispers tales of boundary shifts and administrative shuffles. Before the familiar hum of traffic, this area bore witness to Seoul’s transformation. In 1949, Presidential decree No. 59 expanded Seoul. Guro-gu, then a humble “ri,” became part of Yeongdeungpo-gu. The old “li” designations changed to “dong” in 1950. Gyeonginyet-ro likely saw the ripples of this administrative change. The 1960s brought further shifts. Areas now associated with Gyeonginyet-ro, like Siheung-ri and Dokan-ri, joined Yeongdeungpo-gu from Siheung-gun and Bucheon-gun. Guro-gu’s identity solidified in 1980. Presidential order No. 9630 carved Guro-gu from Yeongdeungpo-gu, encompassing areas like Guro-dong, Garibong-dong, and Doksan-dong, all interwoven into Gyeonginyet-ro’s story. Development plans centered on the Guro-dong Industrial Complex further shaped the area. More changes came in 1995. Doksan-dong, Siheung-dong, and Garibong (Gasan)-dong split from Guro-gu to form Geumcheon-gu, reshaping the landscape around Gyeonginyet-ro. The 2000s saw further refinements. Guro 6-dong merged into Guro 4-dong. Garibong 1-dong and Garibong 2-dong combined into Garibong-dong. Even as recently as 2019, Oryu 2-dong divided into Oryu 2-dong and Hang-dong. Today, as you journey along Gyeonginyet-ro, remember the layers of history beneath the pavement. This road isn’t just asphalt and concrete. It is a testament to Seoul’s constant evolution.
