Jeong Seon was born in 1676. He was born in Cheongun-dong. This area is located between Mount Bugak and Mount Inwang. He showed talent for art early on. Jeong Seon’s neighborhood was a center of literati culture. It was also known for its beautiful scenery. He developed an eye for Korea’s natural beauty.
Jeong Seon gained fame after 1712. His Haeak Jeonsincheop became well-known. This album was based on a trip to Mount Geumgang. He traveled with Yi Byeongyeon in 1712. Haeak Jeonsincheop is now lost. Sinmyonyeon Pungakdocheop from 1711 shows his style.
From 1721 to 1735 Jeong Seon established Korean true-view landscape painting. He held government posts. He was Gyeongsang-do Hayang hyeongam. He also served as Cheongha hyeongam. These positions allowed him to travel. He depicted local landscapes freely.
In his late sixties Jeong Seon served as hyeollyeong in Yangcheon. This riverside district is in Seoul. He often painted the local landscape. He combined delicacy with majesty. His paintings showed riverside scenes and mountain views.
After age 70 Jeong Seon’s painting style changed. His brushwork became bold. His compositions became unique. He died in 1759 at the age of 83. The Gyeomjae Jeongseon Art Museum honors his legacy.
