Gwangmyeong’s story is intertwined with Seoul’s growth. Once, this area was part of Siheung County. In 1963, the northern part of Gwangmyeong was planned to be merged into Seoul. But Seoul’s rapid expansion caused concern. In 1981, Gwangmyeong became its own city. It did not become part of Guro District in Seoul.
