For centuries Gwangmyeong 2-dong was part of Siheung County. It was part of the larger Siheung County along with Yeongdeungpo Guro and Geumcheon. It was part of the West and South townships. In 1914 these townships merged. They formed the West township of the expanded Siheung County.
Then in 1963 things changed dramatically. The northern part of Gwangmyeong’s West Township was incorporated into Seoul. This was part of a larger urban planning effort by Seoul. This included areas like Gwacheon and parts of Goyang. Gwangmyeong-dong and Cheolsan-dong became residential zones. They developed as suburbs of Seoul. The plan was to fully merge them with Seoul.
However the plan to annex Gwangmyeong to Seoul was eventually abandoned. Seoul’s rapid growth was a major factor. In 1974 Gwangmyeong-ri and Cheolsan-ri became part of a county branch of Gwangmyeong. In 1979 the southern part of Gwangmyeong became Soha town. Finally in 1981 Gwangmyeong’s county branch and Soha town merged. They created the independent city of Gwangmyeong. This prevented annexation to Guro District in Seoul.
The 1980s and early 1990s saw rapid growth in Gwangmyeong 2-dong. Many apartment complexes were built in Cheolsan-dong and Haan-dong. The population exploded reaching 300000. A small part of Cheolsan-dong was transferred to Seoul’s Geumcheon District in 1995.
