Across the Han River, the Gwangjin Bridge stretches, a steel and concrete embrace connecting two districts of Seoul. But the Gwangjin Bridge we see today isn’t a relic of the distant past. It’s a phoenix, risen from the ashes of its predecessor. That original bridge, completed in 1936, bore witness to decades of Seoul’s transformation, from Japanese occupation to the Korean War and the economic miracle that followed. The weight of history, coupled with the relentless flow of traffic, eventually took its toll. By the turn of the 21st century, the old Gwangjin Bridge was showing its age, its structure weakened and its future uncertain. The decision was made to rebuild. The old bridge was dismantled, piece by piece, its story carefully preserved as a new, stronger structure began to rise in its place. The new Gwangjin Bridge, unveiled in November 2003, is more than just a crossing. It’s a symbol of Seoul’s resilience, its ability to adapt and rebuild while honoring its past. Now, the Gwangjin Bridge not only facilitates the daily commute but also houses a unique attraction: the Riverview 8th Avenue. Nestled beneath the bridge’s span, this observatory offers panoramic views of the Han River, a spectacle particularly stunning at sunset. More than an observatory, Riverview 8th Avenue is a cultural hub, hosting performances, exhibitions, and thought-provoking discussions. From this vantage point, you can appreciate not just the beauty of the river but also the vibrant energy of the city that surrounds it. So, as you stand here, on the banks of the Han River, gazing at the impressive Gwangjin Bridge, remember its story. It’s a story of connection, renewal, and the enduring spirit of Seoul.
