The Korean Methodist Church gained full autonomy in 1930. It maintained ties with American denominational bodies. These later merged into the United Methodist Church. Since achieving autonomy, Koreans have led the church. Despite challenges during the Japanese occupation from 1910 to 1945 and the Korean War, the church has thrived.
Korea transformed from a rural society to an urban, industrialized nation between 1960 and 1980. This transformation presented evangelism and social action challenges for the Korean Methodist Church. In 1991, an annual conference formed in the south. It was the result of evangelizing efforts. Another conference started to promote the Evangelistic Unification Movement. This movement aimed to evangelize North Korea and rebuild churches there from 1993 to 1995. After rapid growth, the KMC’s membership stabilized in the 1990s. From 1996 to 1998, the KMC focused on world mission. It contributed to global cooperation by hosting the first Asia Methodist Convention in 2001.
To rekindle revival, the 3 Million Believers Evangelism Movement launched in 2002. The goal was to increase membership to three million. The Honam Mission Conference in Kwang Ju in 2003 gathered 40000 Methodists. They came from across the country to evangelize. Kwang Ju is 310 kilometers south of Seoul. The area had few Methodist churches. It was the campaign’s climax. It exemplified fulfilling evangelistic needs for decades.
The Korean Methodist Church Giving Hope to the World was the main campaign from 2004 to 2008. This included continuing the 3 Million Movement. It focused on domestic mission and evangelism. A new system was set up for social work and sanctification. Korean missionaries worldwide were encouraged to preach and witness. They were to respond to global leadership in mission.
Hosting the 19th World Methodist Conference in Seoul in 2006 was a major event. The theme was God In Christ Reconciling.
