Can a high school be a pioneer? Gwacheon High School, or as it’s known in Korean, Gwacheon Goeongmal Hakgyo, certainly was. Established in 1990, Gwacheon High School holds the distinction of being the first foreign language high school in Gyeonggi Province. Imagine a time before the internet, before readily available translation apps. Gwacheon High School was at the forefront of global education, providing students with in-depth foreign language instruction. Students could choose to specialize in English, Chinese, Japanese, French, or German. This wasn’t just rote memorization. The school nurtured a vibrant student life. The biennial Yulmokje festival, organized by students, clubs, and teachers, showcased the school’s diverse talents. Students also participated in debates and lectures, expanding their understanding of the world. Over 40 extracurricular clubs offered opportunities ranging from glee club and broadcasting to Model United Nations and a hacking club called ‘semtle.’ Gwacheon High School even had its own student-run newspaper, Chamarom, and yearbook, Seo-Yi-Seong-Rak, further demonstrating the school’s commitment to student expression and leadership. Gwacheon High School is more than bricks and mortar. It represents a commitment to preparing students for a globalized world. It’s a testament to the power of education to break down barriers and open doors.
