In 1974, a young Hans Ruhnau-Wiebusch, only 29 at the time, took a gamble. He acquired Gutshof Niederheid from the city of Düsseldorf. This historic estate, with roots possibly stretching back to the 13th century, had been a place of agriculture and livestock farming until 1970. After a brief stint under a horse dealer, Ruhnau-Wiebusch transformed Gutshof Niederheid. He envisioned a riding and pony farm specifically for children. This was a time when the “Immenhof” films captivated audiences. Children in Düsseldorf had a real-life opportunity to step into the roles of Dick and Dalli. Today, few children remember the Immenhof films. But the popularity of Gutshof Niederheid, nestled next to the Freizeitpark in Holthausen, remains. At Gutshof Niederheid, children can experience the joy of pony riding. No pre-registration is needed, except on Mondays. A guided ride through the Niederheid woods lasts about twelve minutes and once cost 5 Euros. Parents can even lead their children on the ponies themselves. Gutshof Niederheid also boasts a lively children’s farm. Children can interact with pigs, cats, goats, rabbits, guinea pigs, and various fowl. The farm offers a diverse vacation program for children aged four and older. Activities include riding lessons, rider games, goat milking, playing in the hayloft, and much more. Birthday parties are another highlight at Gutshof Niederheid. While overnight stays aren’t offered, the farm provides a unique venue for celebrations. Gutshof Niederheid has evolved over the decades. It transitioned from a traditional farm to a cherished space for children and families. It offers a connection to nature and animals in the heart of Düsseldorf.
