“Berner Schloss” or Gutshaus Berne. Have you heard both names? They refer to this very place. The Gutshaus Berne stands before us in Hamburg’s Farmsen-Berne. It whispers tales of centuries past.

Let me paint you a picture of its significance. Gutshaus Berne is not just a building. It is a landmark. It is a testament to the history of Farmsen-Berne. The history of Farmsen and Berne began in 1296. Farmsen was first known as Vermerschen. Berne’s name came from the Berner Au stream. “Baren” means a small stream.

The Gut Berne became the property of Hospital St. Georg in 1375. Later, it became part of Hamburg’s territory. From 1600 it served as a summer residence. It also served as a guesthouse for the Hamburg Senate.

Now, look closely at the Gutshaus Berne. It stands in the northern part of Berner Gutspark. The current owner is the housing association Gartenstadt Hamburg eG. They bought it from the city of Hamburg in 2001. It had been vacant. They extensively renovated Gutshaus Berne.

Imagine the stories these walls could tell. In 1886, Karl Baron von Schröder bought the estate. He transformed it into a model estate. During the Nazi era, the Gutshaus Berne was rented to the SS motorcycle school. After 1945, it served as a hospital. Later, it was a recovery home for tuberculosis patients. It was also a youth and men’s hostel and a daycare center.

Today, the upper part of Gutshaus Berne houses the administration. The Rittersaal and two other rooms on the ground floor are available for rent. They are used for private celebrations and events. They even host wedding ceremonies here at Gutshaus Berne.

The Kulturkreis Berner Schloss brings cultural events six times a year. They include blues and soul, classical music, operetta, musicals, and rock music. Christian Quadflieg has held recitations here. British blues artist Paul Millns has performed here. The Calmus Ensemble from Leipzig has also graced this stage.

Take a moment to appreciate the Gutspark. Admire its ancient trees. The Gutshaus Berne and its park offer a serene escape. This is from the hustle and bustle of city life.

So, as we conclude our visit to Gutshaus Berne. Remember its long history. From summer residence to cultural hub, it has played many roles. It remains a vital part of Farmsen-Berne’s identity. A true gem in Hamburg’s landscape.
