Whispers of history echo through the halls of the Gutenbergschule. This isn’t just any school. The Gutenbergschule carries a legacy, a connection to the man who revolutionized communication. Johannes Gutenberg, the father of the printing press, lends his name to this institution. The Gutenbergschule, located on Hamburger Allee in Frankfurt’s Bockenheim district, stands as a testament to the power of knowledge and innovation. Originally built between 1908 and 1911, the building itself has seen history unfold. Designed by Rudolf Reinicke, the structure showcases the grandeur of the Historismus style. Once known as the Varrentrapp-Schule, it even held a young Margot Frank within its classrooms, sister of Anne Frank, whose diary became a window into a dark chapter of history. The Gutenbergschule has weathered storms, both literal and figurative. Damaged during World War II, the school was painstakingly rebuilt by 1955. Further renovations and expansions took place in 1999 and again between 2001 and 2003. For a time, it housed the Werner-von-Siemens-Schule before its relocation to the Gallusviertel. Today, the Gutenbergschule continues its mission of education, focusing on print and media technology, a fitting tribute to its namesake. Interestingly, the school also played a role in the film “Verrückt nach Fixi,” its halls briefly transforming into a movie set. This historic building, protected as a landmark by the state of Hesse, stands as a symbol of resilience, adaptation, and the enduring pursuit of knowledge. As you stand before the Gutenbergschule, imagine the countless stories held within its walls, the echoes of students past and present.
