Think of Akali Baba Phoola Singh’s early life. He was born in 1761 into a Jat family. After his father’s death young Phula Singh and his brother were cared for by Mahant Balram. His mother’s dying wish impacted him deeply. It urged him to be virtuous and serve the Panth. He gave away his possessions to the poor. He started his life as a Nihang Saint Soldier. The Sangat made him the Jathedar of the Akal Takht. He met Maharaja Ranjit Singh. He intervened in a conflict between Sikh forces preventing bloodshed. He persuaded them to make peace. Ranjit Singh then asked Akali Phoola Singh to join his forces. Akali Phoola Singh added thousands of Nihangs to the army.

Akali Baba Phoola Singh’s military career was remarkable. He participated in many battles. He fought bravely. He was instrumental in many victories. He was known for his strategies and his unwavering courage. He even had a significant encounter with Charles Metcalfe. He defended the sanctity of the Harmandar Sahib against Metcalfe’s Shia Muslim soldiers. He protected the Gurdwara. He also defended Damdama Sahib against British forces. His actions at Damdama Sahib are especially noteworthy. Captain White’s regiment was quickly defeated.

Akali Baba Phoola Singh was more than just a warrior. He was also a wise advisor to Maharaja Ranjit Singh. He counseled the Maharaja. He also disapproved of the Europeanization of the Sikh Army. He also opposed the influence of Dogra courtiers and Brahmin officials. He had conflict with them. His devotion to Sikh ideals was unwavering. He always kept the values of Gurmat and the Khalsa panth at heart. His dedication to service and upholding Dharma shaped the Sikh Panth.

He attained martyrdom in the Battle of Peshawar in 1823. He refused to delay the attack. He fought bravely until the end. Even while injured he continued the battle. His sacrifice is remembered here.
