Nine old men. That’s the legend behind Guro-gu’s name. Nine old men who lived long lives in this very district. It’s a story whispered through generations a tale that adds a touch of magic to this bustling corner of Seoul.
Today Guro-gu is known for its incredible transformation. From a center of textile manufacturing and other labor-intensive industries in the 1960s and 70s it’s become a hub of technological innovation. The Guro Digital Industrial Complex a testament to this remarkable shift. This complex even contributed 10 percent of South Korea’s national export in the 1970s. It’s often called Korea’s Silicon Valley.
The area’s history is rich and layered. The eastern part of Guro-gu was once known by different names Ingbeollo-hyeon Gogyang-hyeon Geumju and Siheung through various dynasties. The western part had its own distinct history under names like Jubuto-gun Jangje-gun Annam Gyeyang Gilju and Bupyeong. These names echo through time hinting at the district’s long and complex past. It wasn’t until 1980 that Guro became its own district separate from Yeongdeungpo.
But Guro-gu is more than just its industrial past and technological present. It’s also a place of vibrant culture. The Jump Guro Festival is a testament to its energetic spirit. This is a three day celebration that offers events from a necktie marathon to e-sports tournaments. Guro-gu is also home to one of Seoul’s two Chinatowns a place where you can savor authentic Chinese cuisine and immerse yourself in a blend of cultures. Gocheok Sky Dome another landmark here is a major venue for concerts and sporting events.
The Anyangcheon and Dorimcheon waterways add to the natural beauty of Guro-gu. The Anyangcheon is now a protected wildlife zone. The Dorimcheon although extensively redeveloped has areas that have been restored to offer habitats for wildlife. And a large greenbelt covers 21 percent of the total area.
Guro-gu seamlessly blends past and present tradition and technology. It’s a dynamic district a place that embraces its history while constantly reinventing itself. A place where nine old men might be surprised to see the modern marvels around them. A place you won’t soon forget.
