Five gherkins. That’s what greets you here in Salzburg’s Furtwänglerpark. Not just any gherkins mind you. These are sculptures. Giant gherkins.

This is the Gurken artwork. Created by Austrian artist Erwin Wurm in 2011. It’s part of the Kunstprojekt Salzburg. A project bringing modern art to the city. The Salzburg Foundation initiated it. The Wurth Group funded it. The artwork is now part of their collection.

These aren’t your average pickled cucumbers. Each gherkin stands about two meters tall. They seem to sprout directly from the asphalt. Wurm’s intention was intriguing. He wanted to represent humanity. Each gherkin is unique. Yet instantly recognizable as a gherkin. Just like people. We are all individuals. We are all part of something bigger.

Wurm is known for his quirky humor. His art often plays with everyday objects. Cars houses even gherkins. He pushes the boundaries of sculpture. He challenges our understanding of art. He makes us think. He makes us smile.

He’d already explored the gherkin motif in 2010. His “Self-portrait as a pickled gherkin” was a prior work. It’s a curious piece. It shows the artist’s fascination with the simple yet multifaceted gherkin. A humble vegetable transformed into art.

This Gurken installation is more than just a collection of oversized pickles. It is a commentary on individuality and unity. It’s open to interpretation. Some see critical irony. Others see playful humor. Wurm leaves it to you. He leaves the meaning up to you. What do you think the Gurken represent?

So here we are. Facing these five monumental gherkins. Think about Erwin Wurm’s art. Think about the contrast between tradition and modernity. Think about the very nature of art itself. The Gurken in Salzburg. A unique and memorable experience. An unexpected encounter with art in a historic city.
