Step into the heart of Richmond Hill Queens. Behold the Sikh Cultural Society Gurdwara. This magnificent structure stands as a testament to faith resilience and community. It wasn’t always this grand.

In 1963 a small group of Sikh families began meeting for satsang. They gathered in private homes. Their numbers grew. By 1965 they formed the Sikh Cultural Society. Sunday gatherings moved to rented halls then to St Michael’s School.

A pivotal moment arrived in April 1972. The Society purchased a building a former Methodist Church. This became their Gurdwara. It cost $65000. Significant contributions came from Mr Sham Sani and S Sajjan Singh Sarna.

This Gurdwara isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a vibrant hub for the community. Sunday services draw hundreds. Gurpurbs see thousands. The Gurdwara hosts daily morning and evening services. It offers a langar a free community kitchen. This upholds the Sikh principle of selfless service seva.

The Gurdwara also provides a space for education. Children learn Punjabi language kirtan and Sikh history. The Gurdwara maintains a library with over 2000 books. It has also supported other Sikh societies. The Gurdwara played a vital role in the aftermath of 1984. The Society gave legal financial and moral support to Sikhs. It provided a platform to register their protest against injustices.

The Sikh Cultural Society Gurdwara has endured. It has grown. It serves as a beacon of faith community and service. This Gurdwara stands not only in Richmond Hill but in the hearts of countless Sikhs worldwide. It stands as a symbol of their enduring spirit. It shows their commitment to their faith and to their community.
