It’s a beacon for the Sikh community, a place where roughly 1,000 Sikhs gather from surrounding neighborhoods. These neighborhoods include Selayang, Selayang Baru, Taman Seri Melati, Selayang Jaya, Batu Caves, Sri Gombak, Taman Wahyu, Jalan Ipoh, Kepong, and Jinjang. Gurdwara Sahib Selayang Baru isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a vibrant hub, a testament to the dedication of the local Sikh community. The Gurdwara is managed by elected Gurmukhs, who serve two-year terms. The Akal Purakh Ki Fauj, a youth group led by devoted parents, plays a vital role in the Gurdwara’s activities. They organize events every two weeks, teaching young Sikhs about their religion, history, language, and culture. The ladies of the community also hold their own Satsang every Wednesday afternoon. Gurdwara Sahib Selayang Baru pulsates with life, particularly on Friday evenings. From 7 pm to 9 pm, the main weekly Satsang fills the Gurdwara with the beautiful sounds of kirtan and katha. Beyond prayer, Gurdwara Sahib Selayang Baru fosters learning and education. It houses a Punjabi language school and a library, providing valuable resources for the community. There were even plans to introduce computers and multimedia technology to further enrich the educational experience. The Gurdwara had a dedicated and knowledgeable Punjabi school teacher, Master Ji Jarnail Singh Dhillon “Arshi” Gyani. He was a graduate of Punjab University and well-versed in computers, multimedia, English, Punjabi, Gurbani, and Sikh history. Gurdwara Sahib Selayang Baru is more than just bricks and mortar.
