Imagine being transported back to the 1950s. The British have just relocated Sikh families to the Kampung Pandan Settlement area. These families were primarily cattle owners, bullock cart drivers, and farmers. They needed a place to worship and gather. This is the story of Gurdwara Sahib Kampung Pandan.
Originally, the Gurdwara Sahib Kampung Pandan wasn’t here. It started in Cheras Ulu Pudu. It was a simple structure made of wooden planks and an attap roof. This was common in those early days.
Around 1950, everything changed. The British moved the Sikh community. Two lots of land were allocated for a new Gurdwara Sahib. These lots totaled approximately 12000 square feet.
In 1952, the community built a new Gurdwara Sahib building. It was made of wooden planks with a zinc roof. This marked a new chapter for the Sikh community in Kampung Pandan.
As time passed, the community grew. In 1962, a new Gurdwara building was constructed on the same site. This time it was built with bricks and concrete. It also had a tiled roof. The cost was approximately RM50000.
Around 1970, five trustees were appointed. They were Sardar Bachan Singh, Sardar Kishen Singh, Sardar Utam Singh, Sardar Sohan Singh and Sardar Ajaib Singh. These dedicated individuals helped guide the Gurdwara Sahib Kampung Pandan.
The management committee today consists of a President, Secretary, Treasurer and their assistants. Six committee members support them. This structure ensures the smooth running of the Gurdwara Sahib Kampung Pandan.
Gurdwara Sahib Kampung Pandan is more than just a building. It is a center for learning and community. Gurmukhi classes are held every Sunday afternoon. From 300 p.m. to 600 p.m. about 90 Sikh students attend these classes. Eight teachers guide them in their learning.
Today, about 200 families actively participate in the religious activities here. The normal weekly prayers are held on Sundays. They begin at 630 a.m. and end at 830 a.m. During this time the Asa Di War is recited.
The Isteri Satsang programme takes place on Mondays. It runs from 300 p.m. to 500 p.m. This provides a space for women to connect and engage in religious activities.
In 2017, Gurdwara Sahib Kampung Pandan was preparing for a major renovation. The plan was to build a bigger and better Gurdwara complex. This would serve the community for years to come. The renovation was estimated to cost RM4 million. A groundbreaking ceremony was held for a temporary darbar sahib. This temporary structure was estimated to cost RM300000.
Gurdwara Sahib Kampung Pandan stands as a testament to the resilience and faith of the Sikh community. It started as a simple place of worship. Now, it is a vibrant center for religious, educational, and community activities. It is a place where traditions are preserved and community bonds are strengthened.
