Imagine this: a web of concrete and steel sprawling above us. This is Guomao Bridge. It’s more than just an overpass. It’s a vital artery in Beijing’s bustling heart.

Guomao Bridge stands at the center of Beijing’s central business district. This area is defined by the intersection of Jianguomen Outer Street and the Third Ring Road. The Chinese World Trade Center is right here. “Guomao” itself is an abbreviation. It stands for the Chinese name of the China World Trade Center.

But before the sleek skyscrapers and modern bustle, this area had a different identity. During the Ming Dynasty, this land was pasture. It served as a hunting ground for the imperial family. Fast forward to World War II. The occupying Japanese Army built kilns here. The largest kiln became a local landmark. The area was then known as Dabeiyao. This means “Great Northern Kiln”.

The first section of Guomao Bridge opened in 1986. It was then named Dabeiyao Bridge. As the city grew, so did the bridge. In the 1990s, the north-south lane was added during the construction of the Third Ring Road.

Today, Guomao Bridge is one of the city’s busiest intersections. Beneath the bridge lies Guomao Station. It is a vital interchange on Line 1 and Line 10 of the Beijing Subway. The station opened in September 1999.

The subway station is incredibly busy. During peak hours, thousands of passengers transfer between the lines. The existing transfer channel struggles to handle the crowds. The Beijing government plans to rebuild it into a larger transfer hall. This will improve passenger flow.

Look around you. Notice the constant flow of traffic. Think about the history beneath your feet. From imperial hunting grounds to wartime kilns to a modern business hub, this area has transformed dramatically. The Guomao Bridge stands as a testament to Beijing’s ever-evolving story. It connects the past with the present, carrying the city forward into the future.
