In 1551, a certain John Gun was granted a house in Dublin’s suburbs. This seemingly small event echoes in the name Gunstown, a townland nestled in County Meath. Gunstown, a quiet corner of Ireland, whispers tales of a family whose mark, though subtle, remains etched onto the land. The Gun family’s presence extended beyond this Dublin townland. Records show their influence in County Louth, where another townland bears the Irish name Baile Gun, “Gun’s town.” While George Gunn resided near Swords in the late 18th century, and another bearing the same name lived in Newtownmountkennedy in 1814, Gunstown in Meath holds its own distinct place in the family’s history. The Guns of Dublin were not solely landowners. They made their mark in the city’s vibrant print trade. Between 1677 and 1781, at least five individuals named Gun, Gunn, or Gunne, thrived as booksellers, bookbinders, and publishers, plying their trade on Essex Street, Capel Street, and Pembroke Court. Gunstown, therefore, represents not only a physical location but also a link to the diverse contributions of the Gun family to Dublin’s history. From the quiet fields of Meath to the bustling streets of the capital, their name resonates, a subtle reminder of their enduring legacy.
