Gumdale is a quiet suburb in Brisbane, not far from the city centre. Imagine getting here in the 1880’s. You would have travelled by horse and cart or train. This area was called Grassdale Paddocks back then, and it was a different world from the bustling Brisbane of today. The land was owned by the Grassdale Land Company, who decided to sell it off in 1885. The land was advertised as a paradise just an hour’s drive from Brisbane. They even promised a railway line would be built through the estate. In the end, forty-two lots were sold at auction. Gumdale is one of several suburbs that were created from this land. In 1941, the suburb was formally named Gumdale. This name was chosen because the settlers found many grass trees in the area. And this is how this quiet and peaceful suburb of Brisbane got its name.
