The Gumbo Festival started as a small church fair back in 1967. It was a humble beginning at Holy Guardian Angels Catholic Church. By 1973, Reverend Monsignor J. Anthony Luminais expanded the fair into a full-blown festival. That’s when Governor Edwin Edwards officially declared Bridge City “The Gumbo Capital of the World”.
Each year, thousands flock to this West Bank town to taste its “World Famous” gumbo. We are talking serious quantities. The festival serves up over 2,000 gallons of gumbo each year. You will find two main types: seafood gumbo and chicken and sausage gumbo. But the food doesn’t stop there. You can taste other Louisiana favorites. Jambalaya, red beans and rice, and fried seafood are all on the menu. All-American classics like funnel cakes and hot dogs are available too.
One of the festival’s highlights is the Gumbo Cooking Contest. Local cooks compete for the title of best gumbo maker. They submit their best seafood or chicken and sausage gumbo for judging. Winners receive a ribbon and bragging rights.
