Yet it holds its own piece of Agra’s Mughal history. This mosque whispers stories of royal daughters and imperial decrees. It stands as a testament to a different kind of love, a daughter’s devotion to her father, Emperor Shah Jahan. Jahanara Begum, Shah Jahan’s eldest daughter, commissioned the Gumbad Mosque. Its construction began in 1643 and finished in 1648. The mosque cost five lakh rupees, a royal sum for a royal tribute. Originally, the Gumbad Mosque stood proudly beside a bustling plaza called Tripolia, facing the Agra Fort’s Delhi Gate. Imagine the vibrant marketplace, the scent of spices and silks mingling with the calls to prayer. Sadly, this vibrant scene was disrupted during the Indian Mutiny of 1857. The British, seeking a clear line of fire, destroyed the mosque’s main gate and eastern enclosure. The Tripolia chowk also vanished, replaced by a railway station by 1875. The Gumbad Mosque’s story is one of resilience. Despite the scars of history, it remains a place of worship and a reminder of Jahanara Begum’s enduring legacy.
