Two enormous sculptures stand before you. They are breathtaking. They are the Gum sculptures. Created in 2007 by Stefan Sous and Heinke Haberland these impressive works of art are truly unique.
Imagine the process. A dentist an architect and an artist couple chewed gum. Ten individual pieces were chewed. The two most beautiful pieces were selected. Using advanced technology from the dental clinic they were three-dimensionally scanned.
From Carrara marble two sculptures were created. A complex process using a CNC milling machine was involved. The sculptures are 150 times larger than the original gum pieces. Each weighs approximately eight tons. They are impressive in scale and detail.
The Gum sculptures are situated in a publicly accessible area. They are in the University Hospital Freiburg’s park. This makes them easily accessible to all. They are next to the dental clinic.
