Peering out from Guia Hill, the Guia Lighthouse stands as a beacon of history. It watches over Macau. This isn’t just any lighthouse. It’s the first modern lighthouse on China’s south coast. Its story is etched in every stone.

Built in 1865, the Guia Lighthouse has guided ships for over a century. It shares its home with the Guia Chapel and Guia Fortress. The fortress dates back to 1622-1638. It was built to defend Macau from the Dutch.

Imagine the scene. It is the 17th century. The Dutch are trying to invade. The fortress stands strong. It helps protect the city. The Guia Fortress worked together with Mount Fortress. The Dutch never succeeded in taking over Macau.

Later, the Guia Lighthouse was built within the fortress walls. It became an important part of Macau’s maritime history. Macau even uses the lighthouse’s location for its geographic coordinates.

The Guia Lighthouse is not always open to the public. However, a few times a year, it welcomes visitors. This usually happens in the summer. It is during the Marine and Water Bureau Day Celebrations. The interior has a spiral staircase. It leads to the light transmitter at the top.

The Guia Chapel sits next to the lighthouse. Clarist nuns originally established it. In 1998, conservation work revealed amazing frescoes inside. These paintings mix Western and Chinese styles. They show biblical figures. They also show Chinese motifs. Animals and bonsais decorate the walls. This makes it a unique treasure. It is the only church in Macau with fresco paintings on its interior walls.

The lighthouse tower is 18.3 meters high. Its base has a diameter of 7 meters. It narrows to 5 meters at the top. There, you’ll find a circular platform. It holds the lantern.

The fortress itself covers about 800 square meters. Its shape is trapezoidal. The Guia Fortress, Chapel, and Lighthouse together symbolize Macau’s past. They represent its military, maritime, and missionary history.

The Guia Lighthouse has not been without its challenges. A strong typhoon in 1874 caused it to close for almost 30 years. After repairs and changes, it was reopened. These included the electrification of the lighthouse.

Today, the Guia Lighthouse is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It stands as a reminder of Macau’s rich heritage.

So next time you are up here at the Guia Lighthouse, remember its story. Think about the soldiers. Think about the nuns. Think about the sailors. Think about the typhoons. It is all part of what makes the Guia Lighthouse so special. The Guia Lighthouse is more than just a building. It’s a symbol of Macau.
