On a cold February day in 1993, a tragedy struck GÜvercinlik – 2. This event forever marked the air base’s history. GÜvercinlik – 2, nestled west of Ankara, isn’t just any air base. It’s a place of continuous evolution, a testament to Turkey’s aviation journey. GÜvercinlik – 2 first opened its runways in 1933 as Ankara’s first airport. It served as a crucial hub for the nascent Turkish State Airlines Enterprise (DHY). Imagine the excitement of those early flights between Ankara and Istanbul, a stopover in Eskişehir connecting two vibrant cities. GÜvercinlik – 2 wasn’t just about passengers. It was a cradle for aviation technology. In 1935, the Turkish Aeronautical Association established a training and maintenance center here. Nicknamed “Türkkusu,” or “Turkish Bird,” this center meticulously serviced DHY aircraft in its two large hangars. The airport’s importance grew, and on February 13, 1947, it witnessed history. GÜvercinlik – 2 saw the departure of DHY’s first international passenger flight, bound for Athens via Istanbul. For 22 years, GÜvercinlik – 2 served Ankara faithfully. Then, in 1955, its role shifted. Civilian flights transitioned to the newly built Esenboğa Airport. GÜvercinlik – 2 embraced a new purpose as a military air base. In 1958, it welcomed the Army Aviation School. This school had been established in 1948 at the Turkish Army’s Artillery School in Polatlı. It trained pilots and technicians, and GÜvercinlik – 2 became its new home. Even the Turkish Navy benefited from GÜvercinlik – 2’s facilities. After the navy’s aviation branch was re-established in 1968, its first helicopter pilots trained here. The base remains a vital military asset. It’s home to a wide array of units, from the Special Aviation Group Command to the Ankara Gendarmerie Aviation Group. Interestingly, GÜvercinlik – 2 isn’t exclusively military. It opens its runways to general aviation for domestic civil flights with special permission. The 1993 crash remains a somber reminder of the risks inherent in aviation. General Eşref Bitlis, Chief of the Gendarmerie, perished in a Beechcraft B200 crash shortly after takeoff from GÜvercinlik – 2. The incident, attributed by some to atmospheric icing, continues to be debated. GÜvercinlik – 2 stands as more than just an air base. It’s a dynamic place where history and technology intertwine. It’s a symbol of Turkey’s evolving relationship with the sky, a story etched in the roar of engines and the memory of those who served.
