Did you know that Guetim’s name might come from wild cats? That’s what historian Father Miguel Augusto de Oliveira suggests. He believes the word Guetim originates from the fierce felines once roaming these lands. Others disagree. Joseph Piel argues it comes from “Wiet” meaning “punishment given in court”. But whatever its origin Guetim’s history stretches far back.
Guetim a small Portuguese village in the municipality of Espinho boasts a rich past. Records show it existed during the rule of Count Henry during the Asturian-Leonese reconquest. We’re standing in a place with a long and fascinating history. Think of it a place that witnessed centuries unfold. Its name has evolved too. Over time it has been written as Getym Gitim Gitji Quetini and Quetin. Each spelling whispers a piece of its story.
Guetim was significant even in the Middle Ages. In 1320 Pope John XXII’s tax records mention Guetim. It was assessed at 30 pounds a considerable sum. This shows its importance within the region. The Bishopric of Porto chose Guetim for a special reason. It became a central granary. Neighboring parishes paid taxes in grain and wine. These parishes included Seixezelo Mozelos Oleiros Nogueira da Regedoura Anta Silvalde and São Félix da Marinha.
Imagine the activity! Carts laden with grain and wine making their way to Guetim. The granary would have been a bustling hub of activity. A place where the economic pulse of the region beat strong. The village wasn’t always part of Espinho. Until 1926 it belonged to the municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia. October 11th is now celebrated as Guetim’s Day. This commemorates the change.
Guetim’s population has fluctuated. In 1864 there were 383 inhabitants. This number grew and shrank over the years. By 2011 it stood at 1403. In 2013 Guetim ceased to be an independent parish. It merged with Anta to form the Union of Parishes of Anta and Guetim. Yet Guetim’s spirit lives on. You can still feel the echoes of its past. You are standing in a place where history whispers. A place where the past and present intertwine. And that my friends is what makes Guetim so unique.
