Ever wondered what it feels like to step back in time and wander through a neighborhood brimming with art, culture, and history? That is Güemes. This iconic barrio in Córdoba Argentina has a story to tell.

Güemes is named in honor of General Martín Miguel de Güemes a hero of Argentina’s independence. Once known as El Abrojal in the 19th century Güemes began its transformation in 1862 with the creation of Plaza de Carretas a market for merchants.

Imagine the bustling marketplace filled with vendors and locals. In 1890 Intendente Luis Revol initiated the construction of social housing. This attracted immigrants mainly from Italy Spain and the Middle East. Their diverse cultures shaped the neighborhood’s unique identity.

The heart of Güemes revolved around Casa de Pepino a local business that now serves as a museum and cultural center. Think of it as the neighborhood’s living room. It fostered a strong sense of community.

However progress brought change. In 1980 the social housing complex was demolished. But from its ashes rose the Paseo de las Artes. This vibrant space hosts eight fairs and artisan shops the Museo Iberoamericano de Artesanías and various cultural centers.

Today Güemes is a hub for tourism gastronomy and commerce. It is especially known for its crafts and antique shops. Some even call it the “San Telmo cordobés” a nod to the famous Buenos Aires neighborhood.

During weekends the streets transform into pedestrian walkways. Artists display their talents filling the air with creativity. In 1996 the informal settlement Villa El Pocito was cleared and its residents relocated to social housing. Another settlement Los Mandrakes followed in 2005.

While Güemes retains its historical charm it faces modern challenges. The construction boom in neighboring Nueva Córdoba is encroaching upon its borders. Despite this Güemes remains a testament to Córdoba’s rich heritage.

The neighborhood’s boundaries are defined by key streets. These include Bulevar San Juan Avenida Julio A Roca and Avenida Vélez Sársfield. Several municipal government buildings including Casa de Pepino are located here.

If you visit Güemes be sure to explore the Paseo de las Artes on weekends. Visit the Museo Iberoamericano de Artesanías and the Centro Cultural Casa de Pepino. Don’t miss the Iglesia San Francisco Solano and the picturesque La Cañada.

Consider hiring a local guide to delve deeper into the area’s history. Sample artisanal beers or enjoy a drink on a rooftop terrace. Explore the neighborhood’s art galleries. Enjoy live music by street performers or in a local bar. With over 100 dining options choose at least two or three to experience.

Güemes also has a connection to General Güemes himself. Although he never visited Córdoba he sought help from its governor Juan Bautista Bustos during a Spanish invasion in 1820. Bustos sent 500 men to assist.

So as you wander through Güemes remember its past its present and its vibrant spirit. It is a place where history art and culture converge. Experience the bohemian heart of Córdoba.
