Beneath a vibrant sky, a kaleidoscope of colors explodes onto a 90-foot canvas. This is the Guatemala, ayer, hoy y siempre Mural. It’s a love letter to Guatemala, a burst of color on a once-drab wall in Cleveland, Ohio. The mural’s creation story begins with artist Tessa LeBaron. She saw a blank wall and envisioned a mural. Building owner Gary Grace had a different idea. He wanted something to remind his Guatemalan girlfriend, Olga, of home. And so, the Guatemala, ayer, hoy y siempre Mural was born. LeBaron teamed up with Guatemalan-born artist Hector Castellanos Lara. Together, they embarked on a mission to create Cleveland’s first mural honoring its growing Guatemalan community. The mural pulsates with life, showcasing Guatemala’s rich history, traditions, and breathtaking landscapes. Mayan geometric designs weave through mountainous terrains covered in textiles. The resplendent quetzal, Guatemala’s national bird and a symbol of freedom, takes center stage. Look closely, and you’ll find hidden gems. A jaguar prowls in the shadows. A spider monkey swings through the foliage. A howler monkey calls from the canopy. Iguanas bask in the sun. The vibrant hues of hibiscus, gerbera daisies, and calla lilies add to the tapestry of life. The Festival of Giant Kites graces the background, honoring loved ones and the departed. The Guatemala, ayer, hoy y siempre Mural isn’t just a painting. It’s a celebration of culture, a testament to the power of art, and a vibrant symbol of community.
