Ann’s Toy Closet began 40 years ago as a simple clothing giveaway by Robin Emrick’s mother. Driven by a deep desire to give back after raising five children on her own, she made a pact with God. If He provided for her family, she would dedicate herself to helping others. The clothing giveaway evolved into a toy drive, and Ann’s Toy Closet was born.
The second Saturday of December is a special day at Guardian Lutheran Church. It’s the annual giveaway day for Ann’s Toy Closet. The church transforms into a bustling hub of activity. Families come from all corners of Essex, their faces a mixture of hope and anticipation. The church basement, normally a quiet space, overflows with toys of all shapes and sizes. It becomes twice the size of a typical room, packed to the brim with donated treasures. The air buzzes with excitement as parents browse through gently used toys, while children shop for their loved ones in a separate area called the church parlor. Every child receives a brand new hat, scarf, and pair of gloves. Ann’s Toy Closet ensures warmth extends beyond the toys themselves.
Ann’s Toy Closet is a year-round operation. After the December giveaway, the church members begin sorting and organizing the next wave of donations. A dedicated 92-year-old volunteer, known as the “Bike Man,” refurbishes bicycles donated by the Baltimore County Police Department, providing around 120 to 140 bikes each year. This community-driven effort is sustained by donations from individuals and organizations. Fundraisers help purchase new toys at discounted prices. It is truly the embodiment of neighbors helping neighbors.
But Ann’s Toy Closet doesn’t just operate during the holidays. It’s a lifeline throughout the year. When families face hardship, whether due to a fire or a devastating loss, the church steps in. They provide toys, clothing, and other necessities. They answer crisis calls, offering comfort and support to those in need.
