Can a laundromat become a sacred space? At Guardian Angels Catholic Church in Santee, the answer is a resounding yes. Before the familiar building graced Dalehurst Road, the faithful of Santee journeyed to Lakeside or Allied Gardens for Mass. Then, in the late 1950s, Father Earl Smith embarked on a mission to establish a parish right here in Santee. His first sanctuary? A Quonset hut on Cuyamaca Street. Next, he held services in a laundromat on Mission Gorge Road, utilizing the space on Sundays when the business was closed. Imagine the scent of detergent lingering in the air as prayers were offered. Guardian Angels Catholic Church had humble beginnings. In 1960, the growing parish moved to a private home at 9312 E. Heaney Circle. A covered patio accommodated 250 people, a testament to the burgeoning community. The home served as rectory, classrooms, and the heart of worship for three years. Every sacrament was conducted under that roof. Guardian Angels Catholic Church took a significant step forward in 1961 when Father Smith received permission to build a dedicated church. Inspired by the many children of Santee, he named it Guardian Angels, choosing Matthew 18:10 for the mosaic above the church doors. This verse speaks to the divine protection afforded to the little ones. Construction began in 1963, and on October 28th of that year, the first Masses were held within the newly built walls. The formal dedication followed on April 14, 1964, a momentous occasion for Guardian Angels Catholic Church. Over the decades, the church expanded to meet the needs of its growing community. The Cunnane Parish Center, added in 1994, provides space for gatherings and events. The former classroom building, relocated and renovated, opened as Guardian Angels Preschool in 1998. Even now, Guardian Angels Catholic Church continues to evolve, with the Blessed Carlo Acutis Youth and Young Adult Hall a more recent addition. This hall offers a safe and welcoming space for the younger generation. Guardian Angels Catholic Church has truly blossomed from its humble beginnings, becoming a beacon of faith and community for Santee residents.
