Established in 1889, Guangzhou Pui Ching Middle School has a rich history. Originally, it was the first Christian school in China founded by local Chinese Baptists, not foreign missionaries. This makes Guangzhou Pui Ching Middle School a unique landmark in the history of Chinese education. The school’s motto embodies its core values. The school faced a significant disruption during World War II. In January 1938, due to the escalating conflict, the school was temporarily disbanded. The students were relocated to Macau for safety. The school reopened in Guangzhou after the war, continuing its mission of education. Today, the Guangzhou Pui Ching Middle School thrives as a state-owned public school. Its sprawling campus occupies nearly 70,000 square meters. The school serves both senior and junior grades, with 36 and 26 classes respectively. A dedicated staff of 230 teachers, including 66 senior teachers, guide the students. Interestingly, the school song’s melody shares a unique connection with another nation’s history. The tune is identical to “Wien Neêrlands Bloed,” the former national anthem of the Netherlands. This musical link adds another layer of intrigue to the story of Guangzhou Pui Ching Middle School.
