Guangzhou, though already home to a national-level High-Tech Industrial Development Zone since 1991, saw the need for something more. Something that could truly draw in top talent and cutting-edge technologies. The answer? Guangzhou Science City. Officially announced in 2000, GSC was part of a larger “Concept Plan” for Guangzhou. This plan embraced strategic urban planning, focusing on spatial design and city marketing. This was a departure from the old, less efficient methods of urban master planning. The seeds of GSC were sown much earlier, in 1992, by the municipal government. It received approval from the State Scientific and Technological Commission in 1995. Initial plans focused on industrial areas. Later revisions in 1998 and 2000 integrated living spaces, commerce, and business incubation areas. Construction began in 2000, with the municipal government fine-tuning the plan almost annually. By 2010, the focus shifted to innovation and synergy between businesses within the city. Today, Guangzhou Science City thrives as a hub for electronic information, biological, pharmaceutical, and environmental industries.
