In 1997, a titan of the tinplate industry emerged in Guangzhou. This was Guangzhou Pacific Tinplate Co., Ltd., or PATIN as it became known. PATIN quickly established itself, churning out an impressive 200,000 tons of electrolytic tinplate annually. These shimmering sheets of metal weren’t destined for kitchen shelves. They were the cornerstone of something much more exciting: aerosol cans. Guangzhou Pacific Tinplate Co., Ltd. occupied a significant 110,000 square meters in the Huangpu District. The company prided itself on the quality of its tinplate. The secret? Top-tier raw materials. PATIN sourced its Tin Mill Black Plate, the base material for tinplate, from Nippon Steel and its affiliates. This ensured exceptional quality and minimized defects during the can-making process. The company’s dedication to quality was evident in the tinplate’s properties. It boasted a beautiful appearance, high paintability, excellent formability and strength, along with superb corrosion resistance and weldability. For over 20 years, Guangzhou Pacific Tinplate Co., Ltd. flourished. It played a key role in developing the high-grade tinplate market and its associated demand markets. However, change was on the horizon. The Huangpu District underwent rapid economic development and faced major urban development plans. These factors led to Nippon Steel divesting its 25% stake in Guangzhou Pacific Tinplate Co., Ltd. at the end of 2020. The ownership shifted to Guangzhou Hi-tech Investment Group Co., Ltd., PATIN’s business partner. Despite this change, the legacy of Guangzhou Pacific Tinplate Co., Ltd. and its contribution to the tinplate industry remains.
