Established in August 1930 Guangzhou No 2 High School stands proudly before you. Its history stretches far back however. Long before the school existed the site hosted several important institutions. Xuehai Hall a center of learning flourished there in the 1820s. Then came Yingyuan Academy Guangzhou’s highest institution of learning.
The school’s early years were humble. It started by renting space in Xiguan. It later moved to a new campus on Penglai Road now occupied by Guangzhou No 1 High School. The Canton Operation in 1938 forced a temporary closure.
Reopening in 1947 the school found a new home on Yingyuan Road. It became a key middle school in 1956. The Cultural Revolution brought further disruption a rural branch school opened in the 1960s before being closed in 1978.
The school continued to evolve. In 1994 it was recognized as a first-class school in Guangdong. By 2007 it had achieved national recognition. In 2012 its English name changed to Guangzhou No 2 High School reflecting its expanded high school program.
Today Guangzhou No 2 High School boasts two campuses. The Yingyuan Road campus focuses on junior high students. The Science City campus opened in 2005 caters to high school students. The school’s motto Dingtian Lidi standing with his head in the clouds and feet on the earth speaks to its ambition. The concept Yi-Zhong-Ren loyalty and benevolence is another important part of the school’s identity.
Beyond academics the school thrives with numerous extracurricular activities. The annual Music Creator Concert showcases student talent. The Lantern Festival Charity Sale a long standing tradition combines fun and fundraising.
