Built in 1924 this church stands as a testament to the faith and determination of Chinese Christians. It wasn’t built by foreign missionaries. No. It was entirely funded and built by the local community. This shows a remarkable independence and self-reliance. The Guangxiao Christian Church embodies the self-financing self-preaching and self-rule spirit. This spirit defined early Chinese Christianity.
Imagine the bustling streets of Guangzhou in 1921. Pastor Tan Woxin a recent arrival from America rallied his brethren. Their shared vision A new church on Guangxiao Street. Their collective effort raised over seventy thousand Yuan. A monumental sum in those days.
The result The church we see before us. A harmonious blend of Western and Chinese architectural styles. Italian design touches grace the interior. The layout is west to east. The building covers 1470 square meters. It’s a five-story structure standing 26.7 meters tall. 35 meters long and 23 meters wide.
This impressive size isn’t just for show. The spacious interior houses 1200 worshippers. This is on the second and half of the third floor. There is also an underground kindergarten. Think of the generations who have passed through these halls. Their prayers their songs their quiet contemplation.
Look up. Notice the stunning port glass on the third floor. The light pours through. It creates a dazzling effect. On the fourth floor is the Xingdao Bookstore.
